***In the event of an F grade, a student must retake the entire course in order to graduate

Grades are based on the traditional North American scale with the following meaning:

A — excellent, outstanding performance

B — fully acceptable performance, compatible with completion of the program and award of the KSE degree

C — marginal performance, signaling the possibility of probationary status

D — clearly inadequate performance

F — failing performance

I — incomplete

Grades received each semester are used to calculate the GPA (Grade-Point Average), which is used to rate students’ performance. GPA is a number that indicates the average grade received in economics courses. Courses in English language and other non-economic subjects are not included in the grade-point average. However, positive grades in these courses are prerequisites for the degree.

In calculating the grade-point average, letter grades are converted into a numerical format as follows: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, with 1/3 point up or down for pluses and minuses, as indicated in the chart above.

The use of this traditional grading policy is intended to help PhD programs’ admission committees in North American or Western European evaluate students’ qualifications in comparable terms. In preparing the documents issued for the Ukrainian Ministry of Education diploma, all grades are converted into the 100–point scale used by KSE.

B- Policy

KSE program has the B- policy in order to maintain high standards of international economic education. Continuation in the program is contingent on maintaining at least a B- (2.667) average. After the first two miniterms, students are placed on probation whenever their cumulative GPA falls below a B- average. Students who are placed on probation are not allowed to take an academic vacation and they do not receive the stipend for the period they are in probation status. If at the end of the fourth miniterm the student is still below the 2.667 GPA level, and has not shown improvement in the GPA toward that level, he/she is disenrolled from the program. If a student is able to raise his/her GPA to the point that it is at or above the B- average, then he/she can return to good standing. If the student's GPA falls below B- (2.667) in any other miniterm than the first two, the student is put on probation and has two miniterms to improve his/her grade; if a student is able, within 2 miniterms, to raise his/her GPA to the point that it is at or above the B- average, then he/she can return to good standing; in case of failing to improve the GPA grade the student is immediately disenrolled from the program.
