The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) has established the Roy Gardner Award. This award is provided to the most determined and commendable students at the Kyiv School of Economics to help them cover their expenses when applying to the Ph.D. programs abroad.
Roy Gardner earned his Ph.D. in economics from Cornell University in 1975. Since that time he pursued an academic career, and specialized in the theory of games and economic behavior. Dr. Gardner was the author of numerous academic articles and books. He applied game theory to such topics as class struggle, spoils systems, draft resistance, alliance formation, monetary union, and corruption. Roy recently retired from Indiana University where he had been since 1983. He held the titles of Chancellor’s Professor of Economics (since 1996) and Henry H. H. Remak Professor of West European Studies (since 2004). He will be missed by friends, family, colleagues and by all those who worked with him at the Kyiv School of Economics.
Roy Gardner passed away suddenly in January 2011, several days after he joined KSE as a full-time faculty. Dr. Gardner taught at the EERC/KSE since 1996 and served as the KSE Academic Director from 2002 to 2010. Over the years, he was one of the driving forces behind KSE's academic development. As a teacher and advisor, Roy influenced the lives of KSE alumni. Being the sole KSE senior faculty member, he mentored and guided KSE's junior faculty. Roy's work and reputation provided a quality stamp for the School and gave academic credibility to the School’s academic programs.
During his 15 years working at KSE, Roy Gardner helped several dozens of graduates to make a first step towards an academic career when applying to prestigious Ph.D. programs. He mentored the graduates, provided letters of recommendations, and guided them through the application process. The Kyiv School of Economics can think of no better way to honor Dr. Gardner than to establish an award that will help students in their application to Ph.D. programs.
The winner(s) of the Roy Gardner Award will be selected based on the results of “statement of purpose” competition. The awardee(s) will get reimbursement for eligible expenses (tests, application fees, legal and translation fees, etc.) up to $500. The award will be funded through contributions of families, friends, KSE alumni, and other people who loved Roy and would like to cherish his memory.
