CALL FOR PROPOSALS - FALL 2008

The Economics Education and Research Consortium (EERC)( www.eerc.ru and www.eerc.kiev.ua ) - the Global Development Network’s (GDN, www.gdnet.org regional partner in CIS countries – is pleased to announce the FALL 2008 RESEARCH GRANT COMPETITION.

APPLICATION DEADLINE IS 17 OCTOBER 2008

Proposals are solicited in the following five areas with relevance to current policy concerns in the CIS:

    -- Enterprises and product markets
    -- Labor markets and social policy
    -- Macro, financial markets and open economy
    -- Public economics
    -- International trade and regional integration

NOTE: We encourage proposals for policy relevant research ON THE BORDER OF ECONOMICS AND OTHER DISCIPLINES, such as political science, sociology, demography, geography and ecology.

Please use our LIBRARY www.eerc.ru/library when preparing proposals. The library provides network members with free access to the following resources:

-- Social science data for research and instruction through the Social Science Data Archive (ICPSR, www.icpsr.umich.edu )

-- Journal articles in most social disciplines through ScienceDirect ( www.sciencedirect.com - more than 80 Elsevier journal titles) and JSTOR ( www.jstor.org ) more than 250 titles, with a four-five year lag),

-- A search engine for discussion paper series such as NBER, CEPR, and WDI, and a growing number of Russian language series that are part of RePEc ( www.repec.org)

The best research teams will be invited to present their projects at the EERC RESEARCH WORKSHOP planned for July 7-9 in Kiev. Heads of projects must attend the workshop in order to be considered for a grant.

GRANTS up to $14,000 are awarded to individual researchers or small research teams (up to 3 persons) for up to 18 months. Grant size depends on the number participants and specific budget requirements of the project.

Additionally, young researchers and researchers based in the periphery whose projects show promise may be awarded DEVELOPMENT GRANTS (up to $2,000) and training opportunities in the framework of EERC's Research Development Program. In addition to a small stipend, and literature and data allowance, these grants may be coupled with RESEARCH INTERNSHIPS at the following institutions:

-- New Economic School (NES, Moscow, www.nes.ru) or the Center for Economic and Financial Research (CEFIR, Moscow, www.cefir.ru )

-- Kiev School of Economics (KSE, Kiev, www.kse.org.ua ) and the Economics Research and Outreach center(EROC) - primarily for Ukrainian, Belarusian and Moldovan scholars.

Upon completion of research, the authors of the best papers may be offered FOLLOW-ON GRANTS to develop policy briefs for presentation and discussion at policy roundtable meetings organized by the EERC.

Funding for a subset of projects originating in Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova will be provided jointly with the EROC at KSE.
