HESP/ReSet Project

THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC ASSOCIATION, THE ECONOMICS RESEARCH and OUTREACH CENTER (EROC,EERC KYIV) AND THE LVIV ACADEMY OF COMMERCE

ARE SUPPORTING A 3-YEAR INITIATIVE ON

THE ECONOMICS OF THE FIRM

The 3 year project includes a series of summer schools and workshops. In the course of the project we study how different market structures (from perfect competition to monopoly) influence the behavior of firms. Strategic decisions concerning pricing, production, investment, promotion etc are covered, often using game theoretic tools and concepts. Another important component is public policy related to market structure (anti-trust policy, competition policy) and how such public policy will affect firms. Special attention is given to corporate governance as the study of relationships between the firm and its investors/shareholders.

We also analyze how the firm works internally â that is, how incentives are created within firms, how firms are structured internally - and how the firmâs organization influences its performance.

The overall goal of this project is to increase the quality of both education and research - in both business and economics. This will be done by raising the quality of the material taught and the methods used at economics departments, and by introducing modern economics in the business departments.

The level and goals of the project are interrelated with the current state of teaching of 'the Economics of the Firm' in the target region consisting of Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and the South Caucasus. These countries lack the quality teaching in the disciplines that 'the Economics of the Firm' covers.

Our project consists of three Summer Schools during 2005-2007. The First Summer School was held during July 10-23, 2005 at EERC, Kyiv. The Second Summer School took place at EERC, Kyiv with one week-end spent in Lviv, hosted by Lviv Academy of Commerce. The Third Summer School was held in Kyiv with one week of retreat in Crimea. Between the Summer Schools, there were Intersession Activities such as regional workshops, student conferences and research development workshops focused on the discussion of results of the participants, participants' students and colleagues.
