3 RECENT DEVELOPMENTS AT KSE

The Kyiv School of Economics, founded by EERC and the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, is a world-class academic institution with a reputation for excellence both in Ukraine and internationally. KSE offers internationally recognized two-year, full time English language Master’s Programs in Economic Analysis and in Financial Economics taught by international and Western-trained Ukrainian faculty who have strong backgrounds in teaching and research. The program’s curriculum is modeled on the best economic graduate programs in North America and Western Europe. Students are provided with an unrivalled access to the world economics literature and various informational resources. After the graduation, students receive Master’s diplomas from the University of Houston (US). Current KSE statistics:

4 KSE BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

The annual KSE Board of Directors meeting was held on October 7-8, 2011. The Board members approved the KSE annual report and discussed the strategy of the KSE’s further development.

The Boards of KSE and KEI also decided that from now on, KEI will be known as KEI at KSE. In the framework of the annual meeting of the KSE International Advisory Board and Board of Directors, the Kyiv School of Economics organized a KSE Open Lecture on “Where Has Three Years of Financial Crisis Taken Us: The Experience of USA, Europe, and Ukraine?” on October 6, 2011. This event was organized in partnership with the American Chamber of Commerce. During the presentation, Professor George Daly (McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University, USA), Professor Paul Gregory (University of Houston, USA), Professor Irwin Collier (Freie Universitat Berlin, Germany) and Max Alier (IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine) discussed the origins of the financial crisis, the current situation, and what can be expected next. More than 200 representatives of business, media and student community participated in the event.

5 KSE GRADUATE CO-AUTHORS WITH THE 2011 ECONOMICS NOBEL LAUREATE

Kyiv School of Economics graduate of 2002, Victor Tsyrennikov has recently co-authored a paper on “Wealth Dynamics in a Bond Economy with Heterogeneous Beliefs” with Thomas Sargent, the Economics Nobel Laureate for 2011.

 

6 KSE GRADUATE IS THE ONLY UKRAINIAN SELECTED FOR THE CITI SALES AND TRADING ANALYST PROGRAM 2011 IN LONDON!

KSE graduate of 2011, Serhiy Fozekosh was the only participant from Ukraine in the 2011 Citi Sales and Trading Analyst Program which took place this summer at the Citi headquarters in London. Participants from 50 countries took part in this program this year. The program covered a variety of issues related to the Sales and Trading business at Citi, including networking with all Citi managing directors, intensive professional trainings, as well as a real work at Citi London.

 

7 COMPANY LECTURES AT KSE

The Kyiv School of Economics is actively looking for practitioners to give guest lectures to KSE students. The purpose of such lectures is to bring 'real life' examples and experience to the KSE classroom. We have recently agreed that the lectures of the following companies are organized at KSE in the framework of the Corporate Finance course: Olena Makarenko, Manager, KPMG on “Corporate Governance” Greg Krasnov, CEO, Platinum Bank on “Private Equite, Venture Capital and Buyout Structuring”

8 ON-GOING RESEARCH PROJECTS BY THE EXPERTS
OF KEI AT KSE

Ukraine’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Development Program

KEI at KSE and Academy for Educational Development have recently signed a Collaboration agreement, to jointly work on a “Public-Private Partnership Development Program” (3PDP). The goal of the P3DP in Ukraine is to attract private sector finance and operational expertise to the public sector and to support the adoption of Public-Private Partnership legislation in line with the EU standards. The Project is supported with a grant from the USAID. According to the signed agreement KEI at KSE will provide analytical support to AED.

The Impact of the Financial Crisis on Ukrainian Primary Education

KEI at KSE has done a country study for UNESCO on the impact of the financial crisis on primary education in Ukraine, as part of 12 countries UNESCO-study on this topic. 
The study describes whether and how primary education schools’, teachers’ and parents’ socio-economic conditions changed after the 2008/2009 global financial and economic crisis and how they adapt and cope with the changes brought about by this crisis. 

The GDN Inter-Regional Project on ‘Cities’

KSE-KEI faculty participated in the GDN Inter-regional project on ‘Cities’ which was organized by the EERC Research Network. The project on cities is a cooperation effort between the EERC Network and CERGE-EI (the CEE partner of GDN), focusing on urban policies and development in Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of independent states over the last two decades. The investigated topics range from the existence of multiple equilibria in the system of cities and the drivers of urban economic growth to the real estate risk premium.

10 KSE EVENTS

The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) in partnership with the Belarusian Economic Research & Outreach Center (BEROC) and the School of Journalism of Boston University continues to implement the project “Workshops for economics and business journalists.” The 3rd workshop was be held on November 8-11 and is dedicated to the topic “Banks and Their Role in the Economy.” Thirty-two journalists from Ukraine and Belarus participated in the workshop. The workshop agenda included presentations by KSE, BEROC and Boston University faculty, as well as outside experts, such as Dmytro Sologoub, Head of Research, Raffeisen Bank Aval; Dmytro Yablonovskyy, Head of Financial Research Department, GFK Ukraine; and representatives of the USAID funded Financial Sector Development Project (FINREP). This series of workshops is sponsored by the Media Development Fund of the US Embassy to Ukraine, the Norwegian Embassy to Ukraine, the British Embassy to Belarus, the German Marshall Fund(through a grant from USAID), and the Global Development Network (GDN)

During the Olympiad in Applied Economics
 
  KSE International Student Olympiad in Applied Economics 

The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) in cooperation with CFA UkraineGMC, and Case Champ with informational support from Hh.ua organizes a KSE International Student Olympiad in Applied Economics from November 4 to 25. During this period, the Olympiad takes place in the following cities: Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odesa, Kharkiv, Minsk, and Kyiv.
The winners of the regional competition will be invited to Kyiv to participate in the final stage of the Olympiad.The winners of the final stage will be awarded the monetary prizes.


The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), with informational support from Hh.ua, will organize its annual International Students Conference. The conference will be held in Kyiv on December 3 and dedicated to the topic "20 Years after The Soviet Union: Economic Achievements and Challenges." Students and young researchers from throughout the CIS will present their works and compete for the monetary prizes.

EERC's semi-annual research workshops are designed to promote peer-review and exchange of ideas among CIS researchers and international resource persons. They are funded by GDN  and SIDA. The 31st Research Workshop will be held at the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE), on December 17 - 19, 2011.

A total of 37 projects, including 24 new proposals, 7 interim and 6 final reports, will be presented and discussed during three days of parallel sessions.

The Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) will organize the Open Lecture on "Enjoy the Silence - on the Cost of Noise" by Dr. Diana Weinhold, London School of Economics.

The event will be on Monday, December 19, at 6.00 pm in Radisson SAS Hotel (22 Yaroslaviv Val Str.).

Abstract. Have you ever been unable to sleep because of the noise your neighbor is making? Or unable to concentrate on your work because of all the noise your colleagues are making? In her talk, Dr. Weinhold will talk about the research that has tried to estimate the costs of this kind of noise "pollution" and, more generally, to what extent such noise decreases the life satisfaction of people.

About the speaker. Dr.Diana Weinhold is an associate professor of development economics in the Department of International Development at the London School of Economics. She is also the director of the doctoral research programme in International Development there. Her research interests are primarily focused on growth, development, environmental economics, and applied econometrics. Diana Weinhold is the author of numerous academic articles, books and media publications.
