Victor Kytastys Biography
Victor Kytasty was born on 30 July 1943 in Nemyriv, Vinnitsa oblast. At the age of 6 months, he left Ukraine along with his mother for a displaced persons (DP) camp in Germany and then eventually to the United States. Victor graduated from the University of California, San Diego and received his PhD in Comparative Literature in 1979.
In 1992, after the fall of the Soviet Union and the birth of an independent Ukraine, Victor came to Kyiv as a Professor at the Institute of Ukrainian Studies at Kyiv State University. From then until his death, Victor worked at a variety of positions including: consultant for the Council of Advisors for the Verhovna Rada (19921993), Director of America House (19931997), Acting Director of the Foreign Commercial Service (19971998), Scientific Consultant of the Parlimentary Library (1998), and Director of the Ukrainian Office of the Former Members of Congress (USA) (19982000) in charge of the Parlimentary Intern Program. From 1998 until his death, Victor worked as Senior Consultant to the Economics Education and Research Consortiums MA Program in Economics at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA).
In 1998, Victor Kytasty received an honorary doctorate from the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA). He was a talented academic and teacher, and in recent years taught as a professor in the Department of Philology at NaUKMA. He was dedicated to the development and growth of the University and was an endless source of energy and ideas.
Friday, September 22, 2000, Victor Kytasty passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. He had a heart attack while playing basketball with his friends and colleagues at NaUKMA and died instantly.
